The image of large glass jars full of candied fruit in syrup in their grandmother's kitchen is a childhood memory that all  Greeks share. It's a dessert as simple as can be and at the same time the most loved by Greek families, the "spoon sweet". Despite their sweetness, "spoon sweets" are a healthy dessert, naturally prepared without fat and rich in vitamins and minerals. Almost any fruit can be candied in syrup, with different regions of the country having their specialties, such as a variety of eggplant in Crete, pistachios in Aegina or small "Firiki" apples from Mount Pelion in Magnesia.
